Another first for Upward Bound students was traveling to Connor Prairie for the Follow the North Star experience. The purpose of this event was to familiarize students with the realities of the historic Underground Railroad. Through immersive experiences, students role played what it would have been like to be a fugitive slave trying to gain freedom. This was an educational and eye-opening experience that can’t be fully understood from watching it on television or reading it from a book. However, in this atmosphere, one can actually experience how it would have felt in those times of hardships and triumphs.

Career Day was a very exciting and informational event for our students. Seventeen professionals from a wide array of fields and agencies, such as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indianapolis Fire Department, local health care facilities, NCAA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, WRTV, and even an owner of a flower shop were in attendance. Career Day gives our students a platform to gain a significant amount of information about a variety of career options they may be interested in. This event is one that we plan to hold every year in hopes that our students may gain valuable insight into potential professional careers they might be interested in pursuing.
