Welcome to fall and the beginning of the 2017–2018 academic year! We had such a great summer, and I anticipate a great school year as well. Start strong! Stay strong! As the Third Agreement states: Always Do Your Best! To quickly recap this summer, Upward Bound saw 75 students successfully complete the Summer Academy program. Twenty-four students completed coursework to receive college credit, and 17 students participated in the work internship component. To top it off, the average GPA for students in the summer program was 3.43. Kudos to all! In addition, IUPUI Upward Bound hosted 300 students on campus from six different Upward Bound programs across the state for Olympiad. At the end of the Summer Academy program, qualifying students spent a couple of days in Memphis, Tennessee, visiting colleges, sightseeing, and enjoying their reward for hard work and a job well done. Last fall I applied to renew our federally funded grant, and I am happy to report that IUPUI’s Upward Bound program has been awarded funds for five more years! We look forward to serving the Indianapolis community with more great programming as the future unfolds.
In light of this, let me assure students and parents alike that, in spite of the upcoming consolidation of high schools and the impact this may have on UB students affected in three of our target schools, we are committed to our Upward Bound students and families, and we will make sure that all our Upward Bound students are included and served by our programs regardless of what high school they may attend. In closing, I would like to welcome Denzel Goodloe to our staff as our new academic coordinator. Denzel worked in the UB program this summer as an instructor and residential staff. We’re delighted to have him on board!
Best regards,
Roxanne

Hello, Upward Bound family, friends, and partners! This past summer 2017, I had the privilege to serve as an instructor and security for the Summer Academy program, so you have seen me around. However, let me formally introduce myself. My name is Denzel D. Goodloe. I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, graduated from Eastern Illinois University, and am a first-year graduate student at Indiana State University studying higher education student affairs. I’ve academically advised, mentored, and taught a wide range of students at ISU, and now I am looking forward to bringing that experience to the UB family at IUPUI.
I was super elated to serve UB staff and students this past summer, but now am excited to serve IUPUI Upward Bound year-round as your new academic coordinator! It is an honor to be part of the UB family and all the great resources that enrich student success. My experience as a first-generation college student working with TRIO has cultivated in me a desire to assist students in their unique academic endeavors. I know how crucial access programs such as UB are, and I plan on giving 110 percent to your holistic student success!
I have an open-door policy and encourage you to drop by my office for any mentorship, questions, or concerns. I truly enjoy working with students and look forward to meeting each of you and your parents/guardians as we embark on this journey together!
