What is Summer Academy?

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Summer Academy is an exciting six-week summer program where you can experience college life in a controlled environment. You will live on campus, take classes, and enjoy evening activities.

For six weeks, from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, you will call North Hall dorms your home away from home. You will move in on a Sunday evening, followed by bonding with your residential mentor. Residential mentors will talk to you about what college is like, discuss their major, and answer any questions you might have. They are there to support you and understand what you might be experiencing.

A usual day starts with a wake-up call at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast in the Tower, a typical college dining area. After breakfast, you will make your way to the announcement room, where we go over anything that you might need to know for the day.

From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. you will attend classes. Some of you will take college-level classes, others will be in math, foreign language, English, or elective classes. These classes are meant to prepare you for your upcoming school year.

At 12:30 p.m., you will break for lunch in the Tower. Afterward, you will attend your science and elective classes. Our rising seniors will attend their pre-professional experience internships. The internship is meant to give you an insight into what a professional workplace looks like.

You will then head back to the dorm where you will enjoy time with friends and experience different evening activities.

Midway through Summer Academy, everyone will attend the Upward Bound Olympiad.  All of the Upward Bound programs from across the state get together for two days of fun, learning, and competitions.

The last week of the academy is usually reserved for our merit trip. Our merit trip is a fun way to celebrate you and how successful you were during the program. Past trip locations have included Tennessee; Washington, D.C.; and Cincinnati. The trip is earned by maintaining good grades in your summer classes.

Each day will be a new adventure for you!
